Information sign 11 - The entrance to New England Wood

New England Wood is a precious area of Ancient Woodland.
Species which are particularly characteristic of ancient woodland sites are called ancient woodland indicator species, such as  bluebells, wood anemone, yellow archangel.  You can see all of these in New England Wood.  The Bluebells are beautiful in late April.  Planned and regular coppicing will keep the woodland healthy, allow light into the lower levels and encourage the biodiversity.
